One of the most serious health risks that occur at menopause is bone loss. This is related to the significant drop in estrogen levels, which tends to trigger a shift in the balance between bone formation and bone breakdown. The first stage of bone mass decline can occur even in your 40’s. For women who have good bone density as they reach menopause, there won’t usually be any clinical change. But for women who already have bone loss as they enter menopause, reduced estrogen levels can result in the development of osteoporosis—where fracture risk increases dramatically. This bone loss can be up to 20% in the first 5 years after menopause.
Another important area of health for women to be thinking about is heart health. In the past typically, women were about 10 years older than men when they first had a heart attack, but that has changed in the past 20 years and we now see women having heart attacks in their 40’s.
There are many factors that put women at risk for heart disease, and many of those factors are controllable like smoking, obesity, poor diet and a lack of physical activity. These factors can contribute to high blood pressure, high triglycerides and high cholesterol and diabetes which significantly increase risk for heart disease.
