Better Health Guide
INTRODUCTION: Plan A = A Plan
You can get in your car and start driving without a map and call it a vacation; but as Yogi Berra said: “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” Wellness is a journey so it makes sense to create a plan that answers some important questions. Where are you going, how are you going to get there, what will you do and perhaps most importantly, when and where will you eat? Our Better Health Guide will help you map your course and keep you from getting lost or going in circles wasting precious time and resources. Taking the right steps in the right direction will definitely lead you to the right place in your health – more energy, better health and fully engaged. Click START HERE below and remember we are here to help you find the best plan that is right for you.
Health is built by giving your body what it needs to build healthy cells, by protecting it from being overwhelmed by pollutants, by engaging in physical activity and getting adequate rest. It is our responsibility to take care of ourselves and our families who depend on us.
Getting the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of essential nutrients is like making sure your car has wheels. It really doesn’t have anything to do with how well the engine will run. It just means you can push the car and make it go somewhere.
To get the RDA means making sure you are getting a threshold of nutrition on a daily basis. So getting the RDA is a starting point to building health. The problem is identifying the food you need to reach the RDA. The RDA for zinc – an essential nutrient – is 15 mg. What would you eat to get 15 mg of zinc. Imagine having to do that for every RDA nutrient.
For that reason, taking a multi-vitamin/mineral every day makes sense – it is to cover the minimal amount your body will need. But if you want more than wheels on your car and you would like to actually be able to achieve optimal performance, the first step on your journey to better health is Essential Nutrition.
Essential Nutrition is the RDA and beyond to increase nutrients to a safe, therapeutic level.

The Real Dirt on Dirt
The debate isn’t just about eating the right foods. When we talk about getting essential nutrition, some think that just eating the right foods is going to provide you with those essential nutrients.
Science says otherwise.
A landmark study by the University of Texas found that 43 different fruits and vegetables showed “reliable decline” in the amount of nutrients over the past 50 years. This decline was attributed to the agricultural practices that are designed to improve the traits of the crops (size, growth rate, pest resistance) rather than nutrition. Targeted Solutions for Women
Your body is always speaking to you. Sometimes it is saying, “I’m hungry” or “I’m sleepy” or “I’m happy!” Or your body may talk to you in a way that is called a “symptom.” Symptoms can be mild to severe. A “symptom” isn’t the actual problem – it’s just the manifestation of the real problem. For example, if you are diabetic, your symptoms might a lack of circulation or being dizzy. The real problem is diabetes. Sometimes a symptom is acute – such as a sore throat or a cough which signals allergies or a cold. Whatever the “symptom”, there are ways to interpret them before they worsen and become an illness, syndrome or even a disease.
Targeted Solutions – vitamins, minerals, herbs and natural approaches – can give you many side benefits, rather than side effects.
We can make recommendations for your personal consideration of natural approaches for many common health issues.

Menopause without Medicine Guide
by Karen King
I consider myself the Menopause Queen. My journey into menopause was not an easy transition – it was more like being swept away into deep water. I share my story only to say that I may know something about menopause and would be happy to help you, because I also know there are excellent natural solutions and you will love the results.
My body went through menopause after 3 months of a six-month chemotherapy treatment. I experienced almost every possible unfavorable symptom that can be associated with menopause; but because I was being treated for breast cancer, I was not a candidate for hormone replacement therapy which can increase your risk of breast cancer. So I began my personal journey – to rebuild, restore and recover – not only from cancer, but to be a picture of health during menopause. What followed was nothing short of miraculous and I can tell you that your body will respond to a natural approach to menopause when given the right plan with the right products.
I was not only able to survive, but I began to thrive with more energy and vitality. My most measurable success was a 6% increase in bone density over an 18-month period when they predict a decrease in bone density every year for the first five years you are in menopause. Symptoms such as hot flashes, poor sleep, dryness, and whatever you want to name can be addressed naturally and effectively. If you are interested in Menopause without Medicine, you are in the right place. Shaklee has been building health in harmony with nature for over 50 years. Menopause is a natural process, so why not treat it naturally?
First I want to encourage you to look back at the history of traditional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), such as Premarin. Newer drugs for hormone replacement are now available; however, look at them closely to not place yourself in harm’s way. Your doctor may be resistant to acknowledging risk because of the risk vs benefit argument and will “ease” your conscience by assuring you that the “raw numbers” aren’t bad. But “raw numbers” are significant if you are one of those women who becomes a statistic! Peri-menopause and menopause is an important time – it is the time for your body to be healthy and strong – because strong women stay young!
THE HISTORY of HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
Women had been told for decades by their doctor that hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) would protect their heart and preserve their youth. Evidence proved the opposite to be true. Starting in 2008, the euphoric feelings about HRT began to fade. Headlines were reporting that breast cancer rates began to fall after 2003 when women were being taken off traditional HRT due to the risks.
A LOOK BACK: The “Age of Estrogen”
1940’s Drugmakers mass produced estrogen from pregnant mare urine (Premarin).
1960 The New England Journal of Medicine recommended HRT for “everyone with evidence of estrogen lack” – virtually every woman over 50.
1975 – 2000 Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that HRT increased the risk of cancer of the uterine lining, breast cancer, blood clots in veins and lungs. HRT has been shown to decrease the risk of colorectal cancer and hip fracture.
2002 Hormone replacement therapy study halted. WASHINGTON (CNN) – In a move that may affect millions of women, U.S. government scientists Tuesday stopped a major study of hormone replacement therapy on the risks and benefits of combined estrogen and progestin in healthy menopausal women, citing an increased risk of invasive breast cancer. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) was designed to be an 8-year study. The HRT portion was halted 3 years early when the study showed:
o 41% increase in risk of stroke
o 29% increase in risk of heart attack
o 50% increase in risk of blood clots
o 22% increase in risk of cardiovascular disease
o 26% increase in risk of invasive breast cancer
2003 U.S. breast cancer rates plunged an unprecedented 7 percent in 2003, the year after millions of women stopped taking menopause hormones.
2008 Breast cancer tied to estrogen tablets. SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Taking menopause hormones for five years doubles the risk of breast cancer. The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium confirmed that the “cessation of HRT use is associated with a rapid reduction of breast cancer incidence…” Taking HRT for 2 years significantly increased the risk of breast cancer, but the risk rapidly diminished returning to a normal risk level roughly two years after quitting.
My point here is that sometimes it takes years for a medication to be seen as harmful – in the case of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) it took 60 years.
LOOK FORWARD: The “Age of Health”
Menopause without medicine is a worthy goal, because the natural approach will not only relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and low sex drive, but there are also measurable successes like building bone density and maintaining a healthy weight. Other factors that are not so obvious are equally impressive like lowering your risk of breast cancer and having a healthy heart.
To learn more about the natural approaches and options available to you, refer to the Menopause without Medicine Guide. Remember menopause is not a disease. It is a natural, normal process. A natural approach to menopause helps your body make the transition.
We know with a plan you can succeed. We look forward to working with you to build health and well-being during menopause.

Triple A Threat
By Kathy Spratt Age, Attitude and Adversity. Is the Triple A threat stopping you in having better health? I wish I could say exactly what happened to create my tipping point. I do believe that a lot of it had to do with disgust. I was actually disgusted with myself. This process brought me to recognize the Triple A Effect. With a little effort, these can be viewed as excuses, but I would rather identify them as challenges that many, many people face in their quest to be healthy. Here’s an overview of what it is all about. Age: How many of you are thinking, “I’m too old to lose weight”. This falls into the category of it just being harder to lose weight because of your age. Read the article to understand exactly just how you can discover that it is NEVER too late. After setting goals of losing weight by the time I was 47, 50, and 55… that was a pretty hard thing to even consider when I turned 59 and was determined to do something before I hit 60. Attitude: It’s shocking how much the attitude either makes this whole process easy or makes it an absolute terror not only for you, but for every person in a 100 ft radius of you. Learn how the attitude of “It’s too hard” can be overcome and just how much habits play a role in this facet of change. I personally had a bad attitude because I thought I just didn’t have enough willpower to ever lose weight. Adversity: This is the one that involves such things as health conditions like arthritis, lupus, heart conditions, etc. For me, I have been diagnosed with a neurological disease that is incurable and rare enough to involve a lot of trial and error. I have gone through multiple courses of prednisone so I know all about medically-induced weight gain. Other adversities are financial conditions which can oftentimes be used as the ultimate “I can’t do this”. Learn how that just isn’t true. Even on Social Security and limited income. The last type of adversities are life conditions. That can be the one that can be extremely difficult to control, so you have to learn what you can change and how not to let the other part you can’t change keep you from being healthy! Read, learn, enjoy. Good health is just a click away. We are here to help you take your health in a whole new direction. Start your 180 Turnaround!
Breaking the sugar habit
One of the biggest challenges of eating healthy is removing simple carbohydrates and sugars and empty-calorie snacks from our diet. Sweets and snacks, chips and pasta, crackers and pretzels, potatoes and rice, Cokes, juices and unhealthy energy drinks are everywhere. These foods are high glycemic. That means they spike your blood sugar only to see it plummet an hour or so later thus creating fluctuating blood sugars that lead to cravings and binging and no room for healthy choices. Such cravings are not about will power. They are about a metabolic imbalance that creates cravings for fast sugar and carbohydrate snacks. Following are ways many people have successfully kicked the sugar habit and enjoyed good healthy food again.
Ideal Diet – The ideal diet emphasizes fresh raw vegetables, some fresh fruit and fish and poultry.
Hearty Breakfast – include high protein foods

- Ideas for salads –try a variety of at least 6 different ingredients to create crunch, color, and flavor…
- lightly steamed green beans or asparagus, a variety of greens ( except no iceberg lettuce .. no nutritional value there) , sprouts, red cabbage, green cabbage , peas, shredded carrots, chopped broccoli, cauliflower, fresh white mushrooms, green onions, baby bokchoy, spinach, etc Add a little sweetness occasionally with dried cranberries or dried cherries, 1 fresh orange, rind removed and chopped, sliced apples, pears, grapes,
- Add crunch with sliced almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds…or Shaklee Fiber Plan Daily Crunch Add flavor with sundried tomatoes, fresh herbs ( water cress, parsley, cilantro, ), pesto,

Ahhh, Sleep! Getting your z-z-z-z's
Sleep – when we recover, repair, heal and grow. If you are not getting enough rest or sleep, it can be detrimental to your health. Chronic sleep loss may not only hasten, but could also increase the severity of health issues. Prescription drugs can not only be habit-forming, but can have serious side effects like weight gain – the very issue that can contribute for poor sleep.
Start by creating a good sleep environment:
- No caffeine. No naps.
- Do not watch TV in bed
- Increase your sleep pattern by small increments and go to bed!
- Don’t forget to breathe. Deep breathing is relaxing. Think on heavenly things and leave behind the cares of the day.
- Turn off your computer one hour before going to bed – yes, one hour!
- Do not sleep with a mobile device beside you – leave it in another room.
- If you are a workaholic, read Thrive by Arianna Huffington.
Natural products that can help build a good foundation for a good night’s sleep are:
- Shaklee Vita-D3 – a crucial supplement with many benefits – you can also get Vitamin D from the sun
- Shaklee B-Complex – 1 at bedtime helps with a sense of well-being
- Shaklee OsteoMatrix – a natural muscle relaxant with many health benefits including bone-building and repair
- Another choice – Shaklee VitalMag
- Shaklee Stress Relief Complex – if stress is contributing to your lack of sleep
- Shaklee Gentle Sleep Complex – a botanical high-quality herbal supplement with passion flower, German chamomile & valerian which promotes relaxation, restful sleep and a calm state
Many side benefits – no side effects.

Changing brands can change your life
We know the benefits of medicine, of skilled healthcare professionals who make great sacrifices to care for us. Medicine and science has given us many amazing breakthroughs that can save lives. But journey into another world – sometimes called a “natural approach” or “alternative medicine” as opposed to conventional medicine.
This world is the world of health and wellness. This is a world of side benefits, not side effects. In this world you focus on wellness, rather than treating disease.
When looking at the many natural approach options, you want a health and wellness company that is a cut above. Actually, Shaklee is so committed to being “no brag, just facts” that they funded a study of supplement users – but not just any supplement users. These were supplement users that had only used their products – the Shaklee brand. And how long had they used this brand? For over 20 years!! We don’t know very many companies who could even conduct a study of customers who had only used their brand and no other for that long. Loyal, long-term customers. So the study began. Nail-biting could have been the emotion while the study was conducted since the company was willing to “live with” the results.
After the data was collected and analyzed, Gladys Block, PhD, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, CA and six other scientists on the team, published the results.

My how far we have come. We no longer question someones “right” to make health decisions – deciding not to take a medication because of its potential dangerous side effects, or a person’s “right” to take a vitamin supplement.
We support and encourage you to choose health and wellness every day. We invite you to change brands to Shaklee and to experience the Shaklee effect how changing brands can change your life.
